New Guidance for Peak District Expeditions

The following is a message from the Peak Network/SE Regional Office.

The Peak Assessor Network Website has had an overhaul and now available on the website are:
  • A PDF map at 1:50000 scale of exactly what the DofE classes as Wild Country within the Peak District
  • A Zipped GPX file of the DofE Wild Country Boundaries which can be uploaded into emapping or other electronic mapping programs
  • A new version of the Red form
  • Area Guidance documents for both DofE Wild Country and normal/open country in the Peak District
  • Notified Closures of CROW areas.
The refined map may well mean that a number of Silver teams now no longer need to submit Green Forms and route maps, but only need to submit a Red form which will mean far less work for them.

We hope that this will also help Gold teams planning their routes to understand where Wild Country is, as we are starting to receive a number of notifications which clearly show teams walking in normal rural countryside, which is more appropriate for Bronze expeditions than Gold expeditions.

Please ask leaders to read the Area Guidance notes (at http://www.dofe.org/en/content/cms/leaders/expedition-areas/peak-district) before planning a route as this will help them to avoid areas of known conflict in the Peak and hopefully avoid young people being subjected to irate landowners verbally having a go at the young people.

Last year over 3500 teams carried out expeditions in the Dark and White Peak areas; hopefully with this revised guidance this year will see a reduction in the number of issues that we have faced, and teams will be able to plan appropriate expeditions.
